Salicylic acid, often called beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), is one of the most effective cosmetic ingredients for skin care. It is known for its benefits for skin, especially problematic skin suffering from acne, oily skin, or skin texture issues.

What is salicylic acid?

Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid, which means that its molecule contains a hydroxyl group (OH) on the second carbon from the oxygen in the acid group (COOH). This structure allows it to penetrate the skin and work inside the pores, making it effective in addressing problems such as acne and inflamed pores.

Benefits of salicylic acid for the skin

Exfoliation: salicylic acid is an effective exfoliant. It helps remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, which improves the skin texture and leaves it soft and fresh. Thanks to its ability to penetrate the skin, it can clean clogged pores and reduce the formation of blackheads and acne.

Fighting acne: Salicylic acid has anti-inflammatory properties, making it an effective ingredient for fighting acne. It reduces redness, inflammation and helps prevent new breakouts.

Controls excessive sebum: Salicylic acid helps regulate sebum production, preventing excessive sebum, which then leads to inflammation and breakouts.

Reduction of scars and pigmentation: regular use gradually reduces pigmentation, brightens and softens the skin.

Suitable for sensitive skin: salicylic acid is usually less irritating than other types of acids such as glycolic acid. It is therefore better tolerated by more sensitive skin.

How to use salicylic acid

Before you start applying beta-hydroxy acids to your skin, do a small spot sensitivity test to see how much your skin reacts to the acid. This will prevent an unwanted reaction on your face. A slight pinching sensation is common, but during the use of beta-hydroxy acids the skin will gradually get used to it and this sensation will subside.

You can find salicylic acid in the form of toners, serums, cleansers and creams. It is important to follow the instructions on the product packaging. It is usually recommended to start with a lower acid content (e.g. 2%) and gradually increase if the skin adapts well. Keep in mind that salicylic acid can increase sensitivity to sunlight, so it is important to use SPF during the day.
